Espressif Flash Download Tool located in the directory Espressifflashdownloadtoolv3.8.5. New versions can be found Espressif Download. For Linux or Mac users, the recommended tool for ESP82xx/ESP32 is esptool.py. Flashing Parameters¶ Some flash tools allow to set specific parameters, like flash chip related settings. Upon restarting Eclipse, you should now have Espressif tools in the help menu. Download and Configure ESP-IDF. The esp-idf can be downloaded via the Espressif plug-in helper or on the command line using GIT. To use the plug-in, from the help menu, select Download and Configure ESP-IDF to bring up the following dialog box. Select your ESP-IDF. First you need a firmware file. You can build one yourself with the Toolchain or download one:

  • Espressif firmware source updated at http://bbs.espressif.com
  • Electrodragon's ESP8266 AT-Command firmware describes the AT Firmware, where to get it from and how to flash it. There is a link to Expressif's release page.
  • NodeMCU - firmware for running Lua scripts, or see the forum article Build your own custom NodeMCU firmware in the cloud
  • MicroPython - firmware for running Python 3 scripts. Supports several microcontrollers including the ESP8266.
  • ESP8266Basic - Basic interpreter with browser based development.

    Prerequisites

The programmer I used here was the one provided by Espressif Systems on their downloads page. More specifically, it is the ESP flash tool v.2.3, which you may download from Espressif Systems. The issue with this version of the tool is that it just does not have a “erase flash” option.

To flash the ESP8266, you'll need first need to wire things up. See start-with-esp-12-arduino -> Hardware for the basics.

Connect GPIO 0 to ground and reboot the ESP8266 to enter flashing mode.

A command line utility to communicate with the ROM bootloader in Espressif ESP8266 & ESP32 microcontrollers.

Allows flashing firmware, reading back firmware, querying chip parameters, etc.

Installation

esptool can be installed via pip:

$ pip install –upgrade esptool

Since version 1.3, esptool supports both Python 2.7 and Python 3.4 or newer.

Since version 2.0, esptool supports both ESP8266 & ESP32.
