Discover I Spy: Fantasy, a Hidden Object game generated by Black Hammer Productions. Try to find the lost treasures in the 30 different locations! I wrote I SPY FANTASY to honor the imagination of children. I remember a wonderful meeting in March 1993 when Walter Wick, I SPY artist and photographer; Carol Devine Carson, I SPY book designer; and I, the author, met at Scholastic with Grace Maccarone, editor; Bernette Ford, publisher of Cartwheel Books (a Scholastic imprint); and Edie Weinberg, art director, to talk about the 5th I SPY book. I Spy Fantasy (2003) Simple little point and click I Spy game from back in the day. I remember playing it as a kid, but I wondered if anyone knew if there was somewhere I could still download it.

Early Voiceovers
Mermaid Treasure Hunt
The treasure must be nearby. Let's keep looking.
You know, some people say a mermaid lives down here.
You don't believe that, do you?
This audio is found in triplicate with the game's audio - D_INTRO, D_INTROB, and D_INTROC. All three of the adventures in this game themselves have three variants, usually termed A, B, and C in the files, so these three pieces of audio were probably placeholders for the final intros. The final intros are actually Bink videos with the audio included, so there are no corresponding used audio files.
Interestingly, the two men mention that it is said that a mermaid lives in the ocean. In the final game, the mermaid is actively involved with your treasure hunt, so this hints that originally the mermaid was going to be more elusive.
Congratulations. You found the treasure. To choose another fantasy, click here.
Another placeholder. It goes unused for the same reason as the intro - the mermaid personally congratulates you, and the audio and video are together in a Bink video file.
Fuel Crystal Hunt
These are early versions of the countdown that comes near the end of the Fuel Crystal Hunt adventure, when the ship is about to blast off. They go unused because both situations' audio is included with the corresponding video in Bink video files.
In the countdown, numbers 8 and 7 swapped places for the final. Checking the circuit board comes after turning on the air supply.
Rescue the Princess
I Spy Fantasy 2003
I'll take the key lying on the floor
To unlock the gate right next to the door.
Monkey see, monkey do.
I'll take that key away from you!
I Spy Fantasy Pages
Look! The lizard has a key.
I'll take that away with me.
These three voiceovers are largely the same as their used counterparts, but their voice actor is different. In addition, the first one ends with '...next to the door' in the early version, but just '...next door' in the final.
I Spy Fantasy is a science fiction-themed version of the popular seek-and-find games. Designed to help kids aged six to ten develop skills like problem solving, vocabulary, and visual memory, I Spy Fantasy features nine adventures dealing with dragons, wizards, aliens, and sea creatures. The game includes 54 riddles, 30 locations, scavenger hunts, and special tools like a telescope and a microscope.
As with all I Spy software and books, I SPY FANTASY is about solving visual riddles -- kids look at crowded pictures to find camouflaged surprises. At the bottom of each screen is a rhyming riddle that tells children what to search for in the picture. As children succeed at finding the objects, the riddle words change color to reflect that they've been found.
The game opens to a child's room where clicking on the aquarium leads to an underwater adventure, the sand toys lead to an adventure in a medieval castle, and the rocket ship takes players on an adventure in outer space. Kids find the puzzles by moving their cursor over the landscapes until they find something that animates. Some are set in unusual places, including a dark cave where the cursor becomes a flashlight.
I Spy Fantasy Answers
I Spy Fantasy offers lots of replayability because the three adventures can be worked through on three levels of difficulty. In solving the 54 puzzles, children expand their vocabularies. The nature of these puzzles encourages cooperative play.
Many a car ride has gone by faster thanks to a guessing game that begins with the line 'I spy with my little eye,' where one person chooses an object from the surrounding scenery and the other people have to try and guess what it is.
Children's publisher Scholastic has taken this beloved time-passer and developed it into a series of books and interactive CD-ROM games - one of which is the downloadable I Spy Fantasy.
Like the guessing game on which it was based, I Spy Fantasy challenges the player's powers of observation by showing them a scene cluttered with various objects and giving them a list of specific items to find by clicking on them with the mouse.
That's the gist of I Spy Fantasy, but the game is actually much richer than this initial description would suggest. For example, instead of a simple laundry-list of items to find in each scene, the items are presented as riddles to decipher. A typical riddle goes like this:
'I spy a dolphin, a diver's fins, / A red car, a key, a propeller that spins; / A green horse, a sea horse, a horse for chess, / A lobster, two dice, a dog, and a dress.'
There are three different adventures with a total of 30 locations to explore, all of which are tied together by the common theme of a child's imagination. A bucket of beach sand and toy soldiers form the basis of the medieval-themed Sand Castle adventure; a model rocket and hanging mobile of the solar system inspire the sci-fi-themed Blast Off, and a fish tank is the inspiration for the oceanic adventure Deep Blue Sea.
I Spy Fantasy A Book Of Picture Riddles
As players identify all of the objects in each scene, they'll be awarded items to use towards completing the storyline of the adventure. For example, in Sand Castle, players must rescue the princess by finding the six keys that unlock the dungeon gate. Once the gate is unlocked, they'll have to defeat the dragon guarding the princess by brewing a potion made with additional items scattered throughout the castle.
A few of the puzzles also require the player to drag objects into the right place, use a flashlight to investigate a darkened cave, and use a microscope to magnify an area.
Once a storyline has been completed, it can be played again at a greater level of difficulty with new riddles and different items to find. (There are three levels of difficulty in all.) Increased difficulty means that there will be more items to find in each scene, and the riddles will be more abstract. For example, players might be asked to find '8 wings,' where wings could belong to dragons, butterflies, bats or birds.
Those looking for a laid back gaming experience will appreciate the fact that there's no time limit to solving the adventures. Players can ponder and scrutinize for as long as they like, leave a scene and come back to it, and jump in and out of any of the three adventures. Players also aren't penalized for clicking in the wrong place.
So where's the challenge, you ask? There are NO hints in the game whatsoever - so don't expect to be able to click on a 'help' icon and be led straight to that hard-to-find item. Thankfully, the scenes don't have to be completed in any sequential order so if you get stuck on something you can move on to something else and come back later with a fresh set of eyes.
It's obvious that a lot of care and attention has gone into the making of I Spy Fantasy. It's a playful, relaxed game that offers more of an intellectual challenge than Hidden Expedition: Titanic, Paparazzi and other games of a similar ilk. Playful animations, voice-overs and musical ditties round out an impressive package (although I could have done with a 'skip' function, because as great as the animation and music is, it does eventually get repetitive).
I shudder to use the word 'edutainment,' but it's an apt description of the kind of vibe I Spy Fantasy puts off. Go and download it - you'll have fun and probably feel smarter too!
